2014 was a good year for reading. I started off slow but I somehow managed to actually finish my GoodReads reading challenge of 40 books – and actually surpassed it! So I thought I’d do a little recap of the best reads of 2014.
Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand – GoodReads | Amazon
By far one of the best books I read this year. I’m not usually a lover of non-fiction books but this story is so incredible and so well told, it’s simply a must (full review here – and I can’t wait to go see the movie!)
A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini – GoodReads | Amazon
I’m way behind on reading this book (just like I was way behind on reading The Kite Runner) and I’ll admit, I was a little afraid it wouldn’t live up to its predecessor but it totally did. The stories are harsh and heartbreaking, but Hosseini has such a beautiful way of telling them that you can’t help but feel and love the characters.
Me Before You by Jojo Moyes – GoodReads | Amazon
I went in thinking this was a love story, which it very much it was, but it was also so much more. It was one of those books that had me thinking about the events of the book long after I finished it.
To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before by Jenny Han – GoodReads | Amazon
If I had to describe this book in one word, it’d be “cute”. But it’s a good cute. I loved how real the characters were, it wasn’t your typical rainbows and ponies contemporary YA romance, which why I think I liked this book so much. The characters had their flaws and Jenny Han wasn’t afraid to show them to us (and I cannot wait for book 2 to come out, because I’m sorry but you just don’t finish a book like that, Jenny Han!).
I’ll Give You The Sun by Jandy Nelson – GoodReads | Amazon
I kept seeing this book in various “best of” lists so I picked up not knowing a single thing about it – and boy am I glad I did. You know that book that you simply cannot put down and stay up until 2am reading? Yeah, that was this book. It’s funny, touching, and wonderfully written. Very few books can capture how closely tied joy and sadness can be in real life but Jandy Nelson managed to do it in this one.
We Were Liars by E. Lockhart – GoodReads | Amazon
Also a book I kept seeing in “best of” lists that I picked up not knowing a thing about it. And for this one, the less you know about the story, the best. Because the moment when everything comes together and you find out what happened… I physically sat up and said out loud “WHAT?! Nooooo… Just WHAT?!”. So don’t read reviews or recaps, just read the book.
The Selection Series by Kiera Cass – GoodReads | Amazon
How do I explain my love for this series? I loved it but I kind of hate that I loved it? It’s like The Hunger Games and The Bachelor had a loved child, and boom, you get The Selection – and it times it can be as cheesy as it sounds but I still couldn’t put it down. If you want an easy, fast read that will stir the feels, go for it. If you’re not into YA fads and kind of silly romance, feel free to skip it and judge me just a little.
What are some of the best books you read in 2014?
